Ashura marks the martyrdom of
Ashura marks the martyrdom of Imam Hossein and is the most intense, passionate date on the Shia Muslim calendar, particularly in Iran, where the vast majority of the people are Shia.
It is celebrated with religious theatre and sombre parades, in which men self flagellate, and animals are sacrificed. But it is also a time of the year where people get together, at home and in the streets.
The images in this video were taken on the streets of Zanjan, in Northwestern Iran, in 2013. All audio was recorded live at the scene.
