On 1st January 1923 was the first official day of the big four railway companies. London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS),Southern Railway (SR) and the Great Western Railway (GWR). This was an era of the golden age of British Steam. When Chief Mechanical Engineers (CME), like Sir Nigel Gresley, Sir William Stanier, Oliver Bulleid and Charles Collect were designing fast, powerful, mix traffic and freight engines. These railway companies were showing the British public, who was the best and there was a rivalry between them. Including CME and railway crews. The LNER and LMS race for the North and broke speed records. Like on the 3rd July 1939 A4 4468 Mallard broke the world steam record for steam locomotive. The GWR build powerful and iconic steam engines for the Western region. The Southern Railway is known for operating a number of famous named trains, including the Brighton Belle, the Bournemouth Belle, Golden Arrow and the Night Ferry (London - Pairs and Brussels). When WW2 broke out, that all changes. The big four worked together, help and fight of the enemy. When victory came after six long years, everything changed. The big four were nationalised on 1st January 1948 to British Railways as a result of the Transport Act 1947 and steam ended on 11th August 1968. Today, we have so many steam locomotives preserved at heritage railways and running on the mainline. Also new locomotives being being built as well. The rivalry between the big four leaves important legacy for Britain's Railways history railway and model railway enthusiasts. With model railway enthusiasts detailing the from past and gives us a chance to look back and see a bit history. I'm sure everyone has their favorite railway company. Mine is the LNER because of the locomotives deigns, speed and breaking records. I hope you enjoy this video and thanks for watching.
