The Vertical Flight Society's East New England Chapter held a webinar on Sept. 29, 2020, with Joe Twomey of the Bell 525 Flight Test Team. Joe Twomey graduated from US Navy Test Pilot School (USNTPS) Class 106 in 1993 and reported to the Naval Rotary Wing Aircraft Test Squadron, testing performance, flying qualities, and systems on the H-53 and other Navy/Marine Corps helicopters. In 2002, he returned to USNTPS as the Senior Rotary Wing Instructor Pilot. In 2004, Joe reported to “Air Test & Evaluation Squadron Two On” HX-21 as the MH-60S Government Flight Test Director (GFTD) and shepherded the Air Ambulance program through its entire test program in less than one year, ensuring that it deployed in-theater with no major deficiencies. In 2008, Joe joined the civilian test world, starting at Sikorsky as an experimental test pilot for the H-60 series; S-76D; and S-70i helicopter, then with Avian Engineering as an MQ-8B Fire Scout UAV test pilot and lead courseware developer/instructor for NAVAIR’s Test & Evaluation University. Finally, in 2016, he joined Bell, supporting the 525 FBW helicopter and V-280 Future Vertical Lift programs. He conducts structural evaluation, rotor characterization, height-velocity diagram, Category A profile development, degraded systems, extreme weather, and FBW control law development tests. In 2019, he was selected as an inaugural member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots’ Cockpit Magazine Editorial Board and achieved certification as an ODA Unit Member for FAA certification testing. In 2020, he assumed the duties of Rotary Wing Chief Test Pilot and was nominated to serve on VFS’ Technical Committee. Joe has over 3,800 hours in over 50 rotary, fixed, and unmanned aircraft and is an SETP Associate Fellow.
