How did this British tailgunner fall 18,000 feet without a parachute and live to tell the story?

During World War II, Nicholas Alkemade was a gunner in a Avro Lancaster MK II bomber, was struct after successfully delivering a bombing run in Berlin by a German night-fighter aircraft.

Within seconds, the plane caught into flames and Alkemade did not have time to grab a parachute and escape the flames. So he jumped and fell 18,000 feet…

But he survived the fall…

He woke up deep in snow in a pine forest, as the deep snow was enough to cushion his fall. What’s even more shocking is he did not break any bones, and his only injury was a sprained knee and a couple of burn wounds from the aircraft.
