The Real Reason Why Music Is Getting ESQUIRE | Set Preparation

Tbh, I think getting Esquire, in other words getting used to doing more with less, is just the order of the day all around. Some of the wonderful advances in music technology and their relative accesibility on a large scale has meant it's easier for each of us to pursue what we're into and take it further than in the past when there were more gate keepers marking the way. The only thing is without the visibility of having passed through each of those gates, it is more on us to provide our own validation and validate the work of those in our music community.

Just some of the thoughts rattling around as I work the set again today. I am feeing good about the decision to trim the Canon in DD5. I am not sure if the Esquire 5 is the guitar I want to play Canon 3 on for the performance. I think the other strong candidate is the Bullet Tele, but I am a bit worried about how noisy it might be in the performance zone. Maybe I will try to work out a test in the space ahead of time....

I have also been thinking about the question "why?" As in, why play this music? I think the answer comes from the composer side of my brain. These musical fragments when fit together in this way compel me to keep playing. Both because they are fun for me to play, but also because I find myself wanting to hear them-- thinking them to myself in my mind's ear later in the day. I trust my gut when a musical idea hits that level for me, that it is something I should puruse in practice, performance, and recording.

This is part of why I have been pursuing the DD5 canons. Their particular tension around time and meter gets them stuck in my head. They are challenging to play and I find myself wanting to hear them. I think for me anyway that might be reason enough!!

I know I always list the 4G℞E Amp in the list of gear used in these recordings, but I thought I would mention that it is something I designed and built to provide a wide range of tones. More info can be found here (also if you'd like to buy one!): https://4gre.org/amp/

A word on content: I am working to prepare a set for an upcoming performance at Entropy Stereo ( http://entropystereo.com/Entropy_Ster... ) in Redford, Michigan, usa, on August 9, 2024.

I'm playing the 9-String Esquire and Esquire 5 String through a 9V adapter powered 4G℞E Amp into the Ampeg 810 as usual. Left channel audio is coming from the 810 close-mic'd with the Marantz PMD 222 and the right channel audio is the output of the 4G℞E Amp into a JDI direct box into a hardware limiter into the camera.

Thank you so much for accompanying me on my daily practice for 6/23/2024.

Sending many positive vibes,
