Why I chose the materials used.
Ceramic Tile: I used 2 layers of ceramic tiles as the initial material to be impacted by the projectile. I have tested many different types of homemade body armor designs and the most effective models use ceramic tiles (PEI4 and PEI5) to break up and disrupt the round. Ceramic tiles are rated for their abrasion resistance on a scale of PEI1-PEI5 PEI4 and PEI5 tiles are meant for heavy use walking surfaces and have the hardest glaze coatings and are more durable than tiles that are PEI1-PEI3. These PEI4 PEI5 tiles can be purchased from any Lowes or Home Depot.
Aluminum: The aluminum plate absorbs the energy and catches the disrupted projectile. I used aluminum, because it has the greatest strength to weight ratio. It is 6061 Aluminum and was purchased off of Amazon. It can also be found at any metal fabrication shop anywhere in the world. It was 1/4 inch thick. 7075 Aluminum is stronger but it is less common and costs more.
Denim: The denim is a 10oz weight denim that was purchased from Walmart or any fabric store. It is cheap, strong, light, and is easy to work with. You can also use fiberglass, which is stronger and lighter, but it is not as easy to work with and is less available. Denim works very well when used in conjunction with the construction adhesive.
