History of Chorzów: Roots and Development of the City
Chorzów, often called the "village of the Holy Sepulcher", is a city with a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. At the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, the first brick church was built here, the patron saint of which was Saint. Mary Magdalene. This unique patroness of the church is closely associated with the cult of the Holy Sepulchre, being one of the most important biblical figures. It was Mary Magdalene who was the first to see the empty tomb of Christ, which gives her special significance in the religious tradition.
Development of the City at the Turn of the Century
Chorzów, originally a village, quickly began to develop. Already at the beginning of the 14th century, thanks to the monastery's administrator, the city was well organized. There was a church and an inn here, which proves the degree of development of the settlement. However, it was in the 15th and 16th centuries that a real breakthrough occurred in the history of Chorzów. The extraction of metal ores such as silver, lead and iron began, which contributed to the economic development of the city.
Discovery of Hard Coal and Industrial Development
The year 1780 was particularly important for Chorzów, because it was then that parish priest Ludwik Bojarski discovered deposits of hard coal. This event was the basis for the development of the coal industry in the region. Following the discovery of coal, the "Księżna Jadwiga" mine was established, which belonged to the Chorzów parish. The beginning of the 19th century brought further industrial investments, including the small zinc smelter "Pokój", which also contributed to the economic development of the city.
Secularization of the Order and Further Development of Chorzów
In 1810, by order of Frederick William III, all monastery properties became the property of the Prussian state, and the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher was secularized. Despite this, a trace of the Holy Sepulchres in Chorzów remains in the city's coat of arms - half of the double cross, which is the emblem of this order, next to half of the Piast eagle.
The history of Chorzów is not only a story about the past, but also about the dynamics of development and transformation. From a modest village to a rich industrial city, Chorzów has come a long way, leaving traces in culture, architecture and industry. Today, the celebration of the "City Festival" commemorates the birth of this unique place, whose history is an integral part of the region's heritage.
