PROS AND CONS OF FREEZE DRIED DOG FOOD I RAW DOG FOOD I RMF

Hi PomPomFam, welcome back to the PomPomBros Channel! Today we will be discussing a very popular topic, Freeze Dried Dog Food. According to Zion Market Research, the global demand for freeze dried pet food market was valued at approximately 277.2 million dollars  in 2018 and is expected to generate revenue of around 525.3 million dollars  by end of 2025.
The demand for freeze dried dog food is due to the increase of families bringing dogs into their homes and wanting higher quality of food for their furry friends. So what exactly is freeze dried dog food? What are the pros and cons? Let’s get into the process of freeze drying dog food!

According to Dogs Naturally Magazine, “Freeze-dried food is made by removing moisture from the food in a freeze dryer. As the name suggests … The freeze dryer works by sucking the moisture out at very cold temperatures. In fact, it’s really more of a vacuum process than a drying process.

First the food is frozen, so the water turns to ice. Then, in the vacuum chamber, the right combination of cold and pressure turns the ice directly into water vapor (or gas). It never goes through a liquid phase. This is called sublimation. The vapor then condenses onto a freezing coil in solid ice form.

This process removes the moisture … but the structure of the food remains intact. In other words, the food is still raw … but with one big difference – almost no moisture. Most freeze-dried dog foods show around 5%-7% moisture in the Guaranteed Analysis. That compares to 70% or more in frozen raw food.

Once the food is placed in a sealed package, it can sit on a shelf for years without degrading. Freeze-drying increases the shelf-life of the food because microorganisms need water to survive. “

In the following images, you can see what a dehydrated fruit vs fresh fruit looks like.

To feed freeze dried dog food, some dog parents will rehydrate the food with water or bone broth to make it softer, while others feed as-is. Make sure your dog has enough water if he is eating it right out the package.

Now, let’s get into the pros and cons of freeze dried dog food! We’ll start with the pros.

Long shelf life - freeze dried dog food can last on the shelf for at least 1 year and up to 5 years. However once the bag is opened and the air goes in, it’s best to use it within 1 month and keep it refrigerated.
Convenience - it’s super light and easy to take on travels. Unlike raw food, you don’t need to find ways to keep it frozen on the road.
Better nutrition - Although it is freeze dried, a lot of freeze dried dog food brands do not have nearly as many chemicals or synthetic vitamins in their dog food as kibble or canned food. It has better nutrition to offer than other packaged foods (except frozen raw).
Nutrition isn’t damaged like applying heat so the structures of the amino acids, proteins, and fats are not changed.
Some brands of freeze dried dog food will include bones, others will include synthetic vitamins instead. Bones are an essential component of a canine’s diet to develop properly and maintain their health.

Now, we will discuss the cons of freeze dried dog food
Affordability - This is because good brands of freeze dried dog food range from $30-$50 per lb.
While the moisture is frozen and vacuumed out of the food, minerals and vitamins are expelled from the food as well. Freeze dried dog food shows about 5-7% of moisture in the guaranteed analysis, while frozen raw dog food has 70% or more.

In conclusion, Freeze dried dog food is convenient, has long shelf life, and has better nutrition than kibble and canned food, however it is expensive compared to most dog food and the question would be, how much nutrition is actually in freeze dried dog food after about 95-97% of moisture has been removed.
There are a lot of different types of foods out on the market now for dogs so make sure you do your research when it comes to providing the best and optimal nutrition for your furry friends. For more information on what our 4 dogs eat, please check the links and resources in the description.
