Malayan Blue Coral Snake, Calliophis bivirgatus. One of the most beautiful venomous snakes in the world, and it comes with a pretty crazy story.

Night three of Expedition Sumatra, i decided to head out and do some herping. Three of the team decided to join me for what they thought would be a casual night, it turned out to be one of the most exhilarating nights of my herping career.

The night started off very slow and after an hour decided to cross the river and try the other side, so we took our shoes off and left them on the other side of the river, silly I know. We started walking through some secondary forest, BAREFOOT!! After about 30mins of walking and the path gradually disappearing, i told the guys I’m not feeling comfy walking at night without shoes and no path. So we decided to turn back and call it a night, not even 5mins after that @mushroom_abundance shouts “snake”. A Malayan blue coral snake just a meter off the path we had just walked down. Now the task of catching the snake by myself, as the others were not herpers and had no experience with highly venomous snakes. I have never struggled so much to get a snake into a bag, the snake repeatedly bit the bag and my snake hook and refused to go in. I took my time and tried multiple different techniques to get the snake to slither into the bag, it took about 20 minutes until Thomas had a smart idea and propped the bag upright which allowed me to get the snake safely into the bag, what an experience. A find and catch of a lifetime. The snake was safely released the next day after getting some valuable footage and photographs of this incredible species.

Calliophis bivirgatus is a species of snake in the family Elapidae known commonly as the blue Malayan coral snake. Native to Southeast Asia.
This is a medium-sized coral snake with a slender body. The adult can reach 1.8 meters long. It has a red head, tail and belly. The back is dark blue to black in color.
This uncommon snake is considered semi-fossorial and is found in the leaf litter of primary and secondary forests. It preys on other snakes. This species has unusually long venom glands, extending down 25% of the body. It’s venom is extremely potent which helps with immobilizing its prey like juvenile cobras.
