It's easy. All you need
It's easy. All you need to do is to first create a "link" or "junction" between the default iPhone backup location and your external drive, then do the backup as usual with iTunes.
For windows users:
To create the link, open a command window, and type in:
mklink /J "C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\YOUR_TARGET_DIR"
and "enter". That's it!
For Mac users:
it works the same way for a Mac. launch the “Terminal” application, create the symbolic link:
ln -s /Volumes/ExternalFileStorage/YourExternalBackFolder/Backup/ ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/
Once the symbolic link has been created, open iTunes and start the backup as usual.
