Bicolor Tourmaline by GIA. What is tourmaline, and what accounts for tourmaline color variations? In this video, learn about the science behind rough bicolored tourmaline crystals and how the tourmaline gemstone forms such unique color variations in just one crystal. View an example of a tourmaline crystal that varies from red to green and back to red. Watermelon, bicolor and multicolored zoning occurs when the trace elements change in concentration or composition during a crystal’s growth. Sometimes tourmaline is color-zoned across the length of the crystal: a crystal that starts off as pink might end up with a green tip. Tourmalines can also be zoned parallel to their length, so that a red crystal might end up with a green overgrowth. Dealers call this watermelon tourmaline because their colors resemble the rind and flesh of that fruit. Generally speaking, they have a pink core surrounded by a light green overgrowth but the beauty of bi-color tourmaline is that nearly any color you can imagine is possible.
