My grandmother makes her own Kajal. It's something she learned from her grandmother. Since it's a traditional family recipe, I decided to learn it from her during this lockdown.

Bindi Stamp/Bindi mould - https://amzn.to/3fTV6CL

Here's the list of ingredients you'll need for this:

1. Ponnankanni Keerai / Ponnaganti Koora / Gudari Saag/ Dwarf Copperleaf spinach
2. Castor oil
3. Bricks
4. Edible Camphor
5. Ghee

Preparation:

1. Blend the leaves. We use Ponnankanni because it's really good for your eye. Try not to use water while blending as it dilutes the extract. Just shake the jar a few times and blend repeatedly. Squeeze the juice out of it with your hand.
2. Set the bricks in such a way that you're able to place Castor oil lamps between them. We use bricks instead of a regular stove because we want to create a slow-burning stove that lets the soot from the Castor oil mix with the Ponnankanni extract.
3. Smear the extract from the leaves onto a brass plate, and place the plate upside down facing the flame from the lamps. Ash sticks to quality metal. So Copper and Brass are good options.
4. Leave it in a corner for 6-8 hours. The plate is going to get hot. Make sure it's out of reach so you don't hurt yourself by accident. Keep the lamps lit the whole time.
5. After 6-8 hours, turn the plate around and collect the ash in a cup. Mix a pinch of Camphor and some Ghee. Camphor acts as a disinfectant and also cools your eye. Ghee gives us the consistency we need for Kajal, and holds it together better than oil.
6. Put the Kajal you made into a tiny box. Remember those pretty little boxes they'd gift during weddings and religious holidays?
7. You can use this Kajal with a Pottu achchu or Bindi mould too. It looks great.

I stick to store-bought eyeliner because it's more practical for everyday use. It doesn't smudge like Kajal. But this was a family recipe passed down through generations. I felt like I should learn how to make it and share it with you :)
