Glissando vs Portamento (how to execute it and what is the difference) | Bel Canto Series

In the violin world, there has been confusion between these two terms. After careful research, I have come to a conclusion in this demonstration based on the etymology of the words and their usage among singers and old-school string performers.

The term "glissando" (Italian) and "glisser" (French) mean to glide, and they are typically used to indicate a rapid gliding or sliding motion.

On the other hand, "portamento" is derived from the Latin word "portare," which means "to carry" or "carrying." It is used to emphasize an expressive connection or gliding between neighboring tones.

The portamento technique is widely employed by bel canto singers and old-school violinists (such as Kreisler, Elman, Heifetz), violists (like Primrose), and cellists (including Feuermann and Piatigorski).
