The RivGen® Power System is
The RivGen® Power System is an innovative, sustainable, renewable, underwater energy solution for remote communities around the world which converts energy from free-flowing rivers and tides and, when combined with energy storage and smart grid improvements, provides year-round, base load electricity. ORPC and the Igiugig Village Council, Alaska, are collaborating on a multi-year project culminating with the operation of two RivGen® devices and the elimination of 90% of Igiugig's diesel fuel consumption, reduced noise pollution from diesel generators and decreased risk of oil spills.
ORPC has successfully deployed twelve devices or sub-components in Maine and Alaska. Regulatory agencies have determined “Findings of No Significant Impact” for all these projects. In addition, monitoring conducted with independent technical partners has indicated no injuries or mortality to marine or aquatic life.
With 69 residents, the village of Igiugig is located in southwestern Alaska at the mouth of the Kvichak River and Lake Iliamna. The village is 48 miles southwest of Iliamna, and 56 miles northeast of King Salmon, and its population consists mainly of Yup’ik Eskimos, Aleuts and Athabascan Indians. The Lake Iliamna and Kvichak River water system is renowned for having the best sportfishing in all of Alaska.
