How Do Air Fryers Work?

Don't forget the air! The clue is in the name. An air fryer needs lots of air around it and between the food. Air fryers get very hot in use, so need space around so air can circulate; never use them in a corner. If they don't have feet, consider using them on aboard.

The same is true on the inside. Air fryers work by circulating hot air, and if you pack too much food in then, there are fewer surfaces for the air to cook. Make sure that food is spaced to ensure a good, even crisp.

Cleaning An Air Fryer

Are you keeping it clean? No-one likes the chore of cleaning after cooking. But it's essential with an air fryer. At best, the residues from previous uses can affect flavor, but at worst, it can harbor bacteria or even cause a fire risk. Taking a few minutes to soak the basket and wipe the interior will pay handsome rewards.

How To Use Oil In Air Fryer?

Are you using the right amount of oil? Getting the amount of oil wrong can be a disaster. Too much, and the food will end up limp and soggy, not enough, and it will be too dry. Get it right, and you'll have perfectly crisped food.

Some fatty foods, like bacon, won't need any oil at all, but for these, place some water in the bottom of the fryer. This will stop the fat dripping directly onto the heating element and smoking.

Best Oil For Air Fryer

Avoid low-quality oil. Not all cooking oils are created equal; you will get better results if you use high-quality cooking oil. Like any cooking, the better the ingredients, the better the taste. It's also important to note the smoking point of the oil. This is the temperature at which the oil starts to break down and can have a bitter taste.

For example, avocado oil has a very high smoke point and can easily tolerate high-heat-trying, up to 520°F, or 271°C. That makes avocado oil one of the most suitable oils for cooking in an air fryer.

However, if you don't like avocado oil, then extra light olive oil is also an excellent air frying oil. This oil should not be mistaken for a similar-sounding oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which has a much lower smoke-point and is not suitable for air frying or any other type of high-heat frying really.

However, the smoke point of Extra Light Olive Oil is 460°F or 237°C. Extra light olive oil has a pale yellow color and has a subtle, delicate flavor. It is a really good option for air fryer.

Now, I know, many of you are attempted to use butter, as butter gives the food a really nice flavor. But unfortunately, because of the milk solids in the butter, it is not suitable for high-heat frying. However, if you really do want to use butter for your air fryer recipes, then you need to clarify it first.

Do You Preheat An Air Fryer?

Are you preheating your air fryer? Like an oven, the air fryer needs to be hot, so it starts cooking as soon as you put food in it. Air fryers are relatively small and can heat quickly, so just turn it on five minutes before you need it to get it to the required temperature.

Can You Open Air Fryer While Cooking?

Are you turning or shaking your food? If food needs turning when oven-cooked, it will likely still need to be turned in an air fryer. It's worth developing the habit of opening the air fryer basket and checking food at the half-way point to turn it or give the basket a shake when air frying. You might also want to consider getting a probe thermometer, so you can check the food's internal temperature.

What Can You Cook In An Air Fryer?

Are you using its full potential? Air fryers are incredible kitchen devices and quickly become a mainstay in kitchens. But don't let the name trick you into just using it to fry; it's incredibly versatile; from reheating leftovers, cooking from frozen, or even baking a cake, making donuts, potato chip and lot more, the air fryer can do it.
