Shiite Muslims around the world are taking part in ceremonial rituals in the first month of the Islamic calendar.

During the first 10 days of the Islamic month of Muharram, Shiite Muslims mourn the killing of Imam Hussain, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson. The ritual includes mass gatherings where some worshippers whip, beat, and cut their bodies. The 10th day is called Ashura, where millions of Shiites visit the Iraqi city of Karbala, the location of Hussain's shrine.
