The Nissan Qashqai was the bestselling car in the UK in 2022, and for good reason, because as a family car, it's an excellent all-rounder. However, one of the few areas in which the Qashqai has traditionally struggled more than it has in others has been with its drivetrains, which have always been fairly unexceptional in terms of their performance and efficiency.

The new E-Power version might just change all that. Like most hybrids, it's packing both a petrol engine - a 1.5-litre three-cylinder unit with 160 horsepower - with an electric motor, which develops 190 horsepower. However, unlike most hybrids, the petrol engine never drives the wheels of the car, and instead, is merely there to generate electricity for the electric motor. The question is, has this approach had the desired effect in transforming the Qashqai's performance and efficiency characteristics?

In this CarGurus UK video review, Rebecca Jackson answers that very question, as well as evaluating the E-Power's quality, technology, practicality, and of course, what it's like to drive.

Pros
Lots of clever tech
Roomy and practical cabin
Stylish looks

Cons
No plug-in hybrid
Underwhelming performance of 1.3 mild hybrid
High-spec cars are very pricey

The CarGurus verdict
The Nissan Qashqai has massively upped its style appeal and tech features with this new third-generation model, yet it remains a very practical and competitively priced option in the family SUV class. It is, in short, everything that Qashqai fans will want from an evolution of this family favourite. However, it’s hard not to be a little disappointed by the lack of more efficient plug-in hybrid or diesel engines at this point, and the performance on offer in the 1.3 mild hybrid petrol is rather underwhelming.

The innovative E-Power hybrid powertrain makes this new Qashqai feel a bit more like a game-changer rather than a very smart-looking take on a familiar recipe, but even then it's possibly not as fuel-efficient as an old-fashioned diesel. Still, if you value the smooth nature of the E-Power hybrid or you’re happy with the real-world efficiency and performance on offer from the 1.3-litre petrol engine, the rest of this thoroughly modern-feeling crossover is only going to impress.
