Recording animals is arguably the most challenging task for a sound effects recordist and the sounds are the most demanded by content creators and sound editors worldwide. Well recorded, clean, animals vocalizations are a must for creating any organic real sounding monster, not to mention using the proper animal vocal for a documentary presentation of a specific species. Animals require a good quiet location because they are not as loud as traffic, a car, airplane, or industrial machinery. Recording at Zoo’s is mostly a miss for this reason, sometimes you can get lucky in off hours or a well placed Zoo without too much bg noise. Because we can not control the direction of the animals’ projected vocal we are often presented with off-mic sounds that we have to salvage and clean through mastering, another benefit to a quiet location.

The next step in recording animals is planning when to record them. In my experience captive animals are generally most loud in the morning before feeding time. More wild animals like Lions and Tigers instinctually grunt and roar in the evening before sundown. The best way to plan your recording is by asking the caretaker about the animals’ behaviour and then plan to be there well in advance so you can setup your equipment beforehand. Some animals respond differently to “new” people being around and in some cases you may have to set up your gear and simply let it roll while you hang out in the distance. I have had to do this with Lions, however these Reindeer were much more accustomed to people.

Reindeer are a herd type animal and we use this to our benefit by using simple separation techniques, when a member of the herd is removed the animals will generally start talking. This also works with horses, especially as the distance increases between the herd and the individual separated. For these Reindeer we used ZFR-200 recorders with Sanken COS-11D microphones with ample wind protection. Three reindeer were mic’d up before sundown and early in the predawn morning, both sets of recordings lasted five hours.

Back in the cutting room we search for waveform spikes and dug out the vocalizations and snorts. A handheld Neumann 191i microphone sounds better than any Lav microphone however it’s nearly impossible to keep any Reindeer on the mic axis for that long. Also having a person with a Zeppelin and windjammer chasing them drastically impairs their willingness to perform vocally. My approach is to record animals at their “peak” performance period with a Neumann handheld microphone and record simultaneously a five hour take with the ZFR-200 and COS-11 D. Animals are all about time and patience. Good luck recording.
