William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire, was a British statesman and patron of the arts who lived in the 18th century. He supported causes such as religious toleration and civil rights, and was a key player in the passing of the Grenville Act of 1770, which established secret ballots for parliamentary elections. Additionally, he was a major collector of books, paintings, and other works of art, and his collections were later donated to major institutions such as the British Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. Despite criticism of his use of wealth and influence, Cavendish's contributions to politics and culture continue to be celebrated today.
