After a historic win in Odisha, where the BJP secured 78 of the 147 seats in the recently-concluded assembly elections, Mohan Charan Majhi has been named the state’s first Chief Minister from the party. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh announced Majhi's appointment. Majhi, a 53-year-old tribal leader and a four-term legislator from the Keonjhar assembly seat, was first elected to the legislative assembly in 2000. He previously served as the deputy chief whip in the BJD-BJP coalition government from 2005 to 2009.
Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida will serve as deputy chief ministers in the new government, as confirmed by Rajnath Singh. Majhi takes over from Naveen Patnaik, ending the BJD leader's 24-year tenure. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at Janata Park in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday.
