Welcome to “Travel Guide and Photography” and this week’s video. Join me this week as we will explore one of my favorite shore excursions in all of Alaska… The Bering Sea Crab Fisherman’s Tour on the Aleutian Ballad in Ketchikan, Alaska. I Am Crew and I have worked for 12 years on cruise ships around the world and this year I am onboard the HAL Koningsdam for my 9th summer in Alaska.
First let me apologize to all my loyal followers for the lack of videos over the past two months. I joined my new ship in Alaska in May. I am working 12 hours days as an Acupuncture Physician on the ship it is difficult to find the time to work on my channel. What free time I have had has been spent shooting footage to bring you on the different ports of call and shore excursions. I now have begun editing and posting once again I will post on the 1st and 15th of each month. Thank you for your understanding, patience and sticking with me.
If you are a fan of the Deadliest Catch television show, you might be interested to know that the Aleutian Ballad of Season Two is now homeported in Ketchikan. Captain/owner David Lethin and his crew of merry misfits are all seasoned crab fisherman of the Bering Sea and share their vast knowledge during the three-hour highly entertaining tour. This is also a hands-on experience which enables you to hold live crab, spotted prawns and other creatures of the sea.
The highlight for many including myself is a side trip to Annette Island, where dozens of bald eagles await your arrival. As the boat nears the island 20 to 30 eagles leave their perches like a swarm of mosquitos as the crew toss herring into the water. It is literally like ringing the dinner bell as the eagles fly within feet of the boat, attacking the water in their quest for a free meal. It is truly incredible to behold and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
You also have opportunities of seeing humpback whales, orcas and harbor seals though as with all wildlife it is not guaranteed… but having been on this tour many times we have always seen numerous eagles without fail.
One thing that I have always notice during this tour are the smiles on the faces of those taking this tour. I have recommended this tour to many and have been thanked many times. Recently one of my patients on the ship thanked me stating this was “probably mine and my husband’s favorite memory of Alaska”.
