What makes Jesus happy?
Pastor Paul Timothy Viray | June 23, 2024

“Suppose one of you had a hundred sheep and lost one. Wouldn’t you leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the lost one until you found it? When found, you can be sure you would put it across your shoulders, rejoicing, and when you got home call in your friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Celebrate with me! I’ve found my lost sheep!’ Count on it—there’s more joy in heaven over one sinner’s rescued life than over ninety-nine good people in no need of rescue.
Luke 15:4-7 The Message

We were brought to believe that a spotless life, a life lived in moral excellence, a life of obedience, is the life that makes Jesus happy. Again and again, we were taught to deny ourselves and to count the cost because this is what it takes to become a "worthy" follower of the Lord. We were taught that we have to pay the price. Doing so would gain the approval of Jesus and make Him happy. But thanks be to God for opening our eyes to see the real Jesus! We are now slowly discovering that the Jesus in the Bible is far different from the Jesus we were taught to believe!

So what makes Jesus happy?

It is not when we live a worthy life. We saw in Luke 14 that Jesus was surrounded by "worthy", "morally upright" and accomplished people. And yet Jesus was uncomfortable. These people invited Jesus to watch Him, to try to copy and be like Him. They were so strong in their own eyes that they thought they can be like Jesus if they observe Him enough. Jesus did not feel at home. He was grieved.

So what makes Jesus happy?

It is when you give Him consent to save you! It is when you "let" Him to carry you on His shoulders! It is when you depend on Him to carry you to your destination! It is when you let Him be a Savior to you!

You see, the "worthy" people of Luke 14 were so strong in themselves that they have no need of a Savior. They were so "worthy" that they do not need any saving. However the tax collectors and sinners who came to Jesus in Luke 15 knew how weak they were! They knew how much of a failure they are and could only hope for a Savior to rescue them! This gave Jesus much pleasure!!!

We make Jesus happy every time we look to Him for salvation! We make Him happy when we recognize that in and of ourselves, we cannot do anything because of how weak we are and so we look to Him for salvation! We make Him happy when we give Him the chance to use His strength for the ones He love! We make Him happy when we allow Him to save us!!!

So Church, let us make Jesus happy this week! Instead of relying on our own strength to face the challenges, let us rest and look to Jesus for salvation! Let us simply relax in His broad shoulders and allow Him to carry us to our destinations! Let us lean hard on His love for us! Let us remember that He is our God throughout our lifetime until our hair becomes gray! He is our Savior who will save us and carry us to the end!!!
