What is the Early Effect?

When BJT is operated in the forward active region, then for the fixed value of voltage Vbe, when we increase the collector to emitter voltage (Vce), then ideally the current should remain constant.
But actually, the collector current slightly increases, with the change in the voltage Vce.

It happens because, with the increase in the collector to emitter voltage (Vce), the collector-base junction gets more reverse biased and because of that the width of the depletion region increases.
And because of this increased depletion region width, the effective base width reduces.

The effect is also known as the base width modulation because the effective base width is the function of the voltage Vce.

So, when voltage Vce is increased, the effective base width reduces and because of that, the chances of recombination in the base region reduces.
And that leads to an increase in the collector current.

This effect is known as the Early Effect.

The Early Voltage :
In Ic versus Vce curve, when the curves are extrapolated on the X-axis, then at a particular value of voltage Vce, the collector current Ic becomes zero.

The magnitude of the voltage at which it occurs is known as the early voltage.
For BJT,  typically it is in the range of 10V to 100 V.
