Figuring out when to begin the toe decreases:
It takes 23 (26, 28) rows to decrease the number of stitches down to (16 sts) the point at which you graft the toe closed.  So knowing that, you can count your rows and measure to see exactly when you need to begin the toe decreases, based on the length of your foot minus that amount.

Note: The Beginning of Round is at the beginning of the back half of the stitches, or the side of the sock where the heel flap begins.

JANA'S ROUNDED TOE (knitted from the cuff down)
Row 1:  *k1, ssk, knit to 3 sts before the end either the sole stitches of the top or the foot stitches, depending upon where your beginning of the round is.  k2tog, k1. *  Repeat on the other side of your sock.
Row 2 & 3 - Knit a plain round
Repeat rows 1-3 until you have decreases the total number of stitches by 12.
Row 4 *Repeat row 1, the decrease round
Row 5 Knit a row.*
Repeat rows 4 and 5,  alternating between a decrease round and a plain round until you have half the original number of cast on stitches left.  For example, If you began with 64 (72, 80) sts, you should repeat these two rounds until you have 32 (36, 40)  sts left, or 16 (18, 20) stitches on each needle (if you’re using magic loop or 2 circulars.)
Half the number of original stitches.
Now knit the decrease row (row 1) every round until you have 16 stitches remaining, or 8 stitches on each needle. Graft these stitches using the Kitchener method show here:

Kitchener Stitch without "Ears"

Kitchener instructions:
When you have 8 stitches on each needle and your working yarn is on the right end of the sole stitches, cut yarn, leaving a 12-18" tail.

1) Insert the needle into the first stitch as if to knit, pull yarn through and slip off st off needle
2) Insert the needle into the next stitch as if you purl, pull yarn through and leave stitch on.
On the "back needle" with the purl bumps facing you (do not turn the sock over)
3) Insert the needle into the first stitch as if to purl, pull yarn through and slip stitch off
4) Insert the needle into the next stitch as if to knit, pull yarn through and leave stitch on.
Repeat steps until all stitches are grafted.
