Historical Flags of the Philippines: The Flag of the Philippines (Filipino: Pambansang Watawat ng Pilipinas) is a flag bicolor with bands of blue and red, with a white triangle. In the center of the triangle is a golden sun with eight rays, each representing a Philippine province. At each vertex of the triangle is a star, and each star represents one of three main island groups. The white triangle at the flag of the Philippines represents liberty, equality, and fraternity. A unique feature of the flag of the Philippines is its usage to indicate a state of war if it is displayed with the red side on top, which is effectively achieved by flipping the flag upside-down.
