We walk you through the most common breaker lockout device installation along with adding the LOTO padlock, LOTO tag, and OSHA approved nylon tie. This is the smallest of the breaker lockout that we offer in our LOTO kits, but its the most widely used and most versatile. We show it with and without the detachable cleat. The cleat is the piece that sits on the bottom of the device and expands the range of breakers it can lockout by bracing the device further away for some applications.

The most common complication, lockout failure, or reason for frustration with a breaker lockout such as the one in this video, is the 3 step process for properly gripping the breaker toggle.
1. The tightening screw must be loosened substantially
2. After the device is placed over the toggle, push the red part(the main body piece) together with the black clamp part.
3. Position the screw head in the middle of the toggle and tighten.

You should receive proper training from an OSHA certified trainer. This video is not intended to replace any required or accredited training on installation. These are our instructions performed by an experienced safety manager.

This will create a substantial grip on the breaker and not allow it to energize.

We used a Square D PowerPact H-frame molded case circuit breaker, with I-Line Circuit Breaker, that's thermal-magnetic, and has 40A, 3P, 600V, 14kA capacity. There was no reason for picking this particular breaker except it just seems to be abundant in the panels we were shooting in.

These breaker locks will never be as effective as a built-in locking mechanism and they aren't vandal proof or resistant to someone intent on removing them. That's not their purpose. They meet and exceed the OSHA 1910.147 standards and do a fantastic job locking a wide range of electric breakers and toggles. They are versatile and serve the purpose of locking out hazardous energy and, when combined with our LOTO tag, Hasp, and nylon tie, it's obvious that the breaker is locked out and should not be tampered with. In this video, we used our premium TRADESAFE LOTO padlock and all-weather LOTO tag. Both of which are standard in our Lockout Tagout Kits found at trdsf.com.

According to OSHA 1910.147 Lockout devices should be 'substantial enough to prevent the removal w/out using excessive force'
