Softball Pitch Types: The Screwball

The screwball is a pitch that every new softball pitcher should have in their arsenal. Easy and effective, the screwball is a breaking pitch that releases from the side of your body. The screwball is thrown similar to a fastball. The main difference is that there is an emphasis placed on your index finger. It will be the last finger to leave the ball. When throwing a screwball, it is also crucial to get a good angle by dipping your hips back and leading with your pinky. One way to work on this pitch is with the Screwball Snap Drill. For this drill you’ll stand five to seven feet from your catcher and isolate your forearm and wrist.
