3 players the Browns could trade ahead of training camp. The Cleveland Browns have enough depth that they could unload some talent to pick up future draft capital. Not only has general manager Andrew Berry built the most complete roster the Cleveland Browns organization has seen since returning to the league, but it's also one of the best in the NFL. With talent from top to bottom, there are very few holes throughout the depth chart.
3. Jerome Ford, Running Back
When Nick Chubb was injured in Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jerome Ford was pushed into a starting role. A fifth-round pick in 2022, Ford had just 12 yards on eight rushing attempts as a rookie. In Week 1 as the No. 2 back, he had 36 yards on 15 attempts. He surpassed those numbers easily with 106 yards on 16 attempts against the Steelers — although he was aided by a 69-yard run in the third quarter. That was the story of the season for Ford, who finished with 813 yards on the ground but had 32.7 percent of his yardage come from eight breakaway runs.
With Chubb still working his way back from his knee injury, Ford is expected to work in a committee with D'Onta Foreman and Nyheim Hines. Even so, there's a scenario where Foreman proves to be capable of carrying the load and the Browns move on from Ford — with Chubb potentially returning earlier than anticipated.
If the Browns believe Ford is expendable, they could look to send him to a running back-needy team. The Dallas Cowboys are one that comes to mind but an injury elsewhere could prompt another franchise to be willing to send a pick to Cleveland in exchange for the third-year back.
2. Maurice Hurst, Jr., Defensive Tackle
Andrew Berry has been quick to sign veteran players to one-year deals to prove they still have what it takes to succeed in the NFL. He did this in 2023 with Maurice Hurst, Jr. who was a fifth-round pick of the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders in 2018.
Hurst recorded 7.5 sacks in his first two seasons with the Raiders before injuries began to slow him down. He missed five games in 2020 and then signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 but suited up for just two games and recorded two tackles.
He then missed the entire 2022 campaign due to a torn bicep. He signed with Cleveland in the offseason and was able to play in 13 games before a calf injury sent him to the IR. Before his injury, he was an impactful player with 22 tackles, 1.5 sacks, three pass defenses, and an interception.
Hurst re-signed in the offseason but joins a crowded interior line. Cleveland also re-signed Shelby Harris while bringing in Quinton Jefferson as a free-agency addition and Michael Hall, Jr. as their first pick — in Round 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft. Cleveland will have some tough decisions to make when they trim the roster down to 53 players and that could come down to keeping Hurst or 2023 third-round pick Siaki Ika. While Ika didn't impress as a rookie, he has the potential to be the long-term nose tackle, which might be enough to keep him around. In that scenario, the Browns would likely be willing to listen to offers for Hurst, who proved he can still bring the heat as an interior pass rusher.
1. Elijah Moore, Wide Receiver
Ahead of the 2023 season, Cleveland sent the 42nd pick in the NFL Draft to the New York Jets in exchange for Elijah Moore and the 74th pick. In 27 games, he recorded 80 receptions for 984 yards and six touchdowns before falling out of favor with the coaching staff. With the Browns, he was expected to be featured more in the passing attack and that was the case. Moore had 59 receptions for 640 yards with two touchdowns. Those numbers were better than what he had with the Jets but still not up to expectations.
He returns for a second season with Cleveland and finds himself pushed down to the No. 3 spot with Jerry Jeudy being added in a trade with the Denver Broncos. His slide might continue from there with reports coming out of Berea indicating Cedric Tillman could surpass him in the pecking order as well.
Tillman was selected with the 74th pick acquired in the trade with New York and as a rookie, he put up modest numbers — 21 receptions for 224 yards. He then showed up to offseason workouts in excellent shape with a determination to take his next step as a pro. Tillman also took advantage of the absence of Amari Cooper, who is holding out for a new contract, and Jerry Jeudy who suffered a minor injury during mandatory minicamps.
