The world of latin music is massive. There are 21 countries (I'm not sure why Guyana and Suriname aren't counted) with 680,000 million people. 20 of those countries speak Castellano, the langauge that we call Spanish, which technically isn't correct because the country of España is much more linguisticly diverse than we are led to believe in the Americas. Another crazy stat is that only one of those countries speaks Portuguese but it still accounts for 1/3rd of the entire population of Latin America. We should also give a second to mention all of the diversity of langauge that exists there due to the large presence of native people and their native tounges with countires like Bolivia and Guatemala being over 50% native. As a result we see a lot of native languages and in Peru, 45% native, Quechua is one the official langauge along with Castellano! When you mix in the afo influences from the slave trade you have an extreme diversity of rhythm, dances, melodies and music that is rich and rip for the exploring. The genre we are exploring today, Salsa, gets its name from a being a mix of all these rhythms and all of these cutlures. Ironically it was actually born in New York City, but that is also a city where you can meet latinos from every part of Latin America from every culture, demographic, socio-economic background, etc, and when all they all come together and share their rhythms... salsa is born!.
This lesson focuses on a 2-3 clave groove and the piano piece has been transcribed to the guitar. Note the heavy use of syncopation and how the four chords are used with arpeggios, triads and inversions to make a hyponetic groove that is great for dancing. Enjoy!
