GREAT WALL  |  China Places

Welcome to Anthronauts. I’m your traveling anthropologist Mark Thomas.  Imagine when you arrive in China, and somebody comes up to you to ask if you are going see Chángchéng 长城 (長城), and you suddenly feel like a deer in headlights. What are they talking about?! Don’t worry; we’re here to solve that mystery…
---------------------------------------------------------
But first, we have Breaking Knews:
The Great Wall is named after a mythical creature.
What is this nickname?
-----------------------------------------------------------
When you visit China, and you have time only to tour one site, be sure to visit Chángchéng 长城 (長城) which refers to the Great Wall or the ‘Long Wall’. This UNESCO World heritage site is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World which stretches over 21 thousand kilometres from Lintao to Liadong. The Great Wall of China is actually a collection of archaeological fortifications that were used as Wakanda-like defensive barriers dating as far back as the 7th century B.C. I visit the most popular and best preserved site called Bādálǐng八达岭, which the Ming Dynasty commissioned in 1504 to defend against the Mongolian northern invasions, and is eventually conquered by the Manchu, Qing Dynasty. One thing you notice is that most tourists here are the local people, so as a foreign visitor, you just might stand out a bit. With my tour group, we explore this beautiful, tree-filled, mountainous area which is only about 80 kilometres northwest of China’s capital Beijing. In the Great Wall village , there are shops, restaurants, and amazing bears who love apples.
After exploring this area, you can hike or take transportation up to the North Tower, number four. We take the pulley cars which resemble a rollercoaster, and it’s a chill way to get to the top.  Historically, Chinese soldiers man these 43 watchtowers to look out for invaders. If an enemy is spotted, they light a progressive series of beacons to alert the troops just like they in the film, the Lord of Rings.  The original wall is formed from stamped clay, branches, and stone, but this portion is made from sturdier bricks assembled by peasants and forced laborers. When they died, they would be buried near or even in the wall, which is 12 kilometres long, with about a third of it that’s accessible to tourism. After taking selfies and interacting with the others, my favorite thing to do is just peer over the edge and view this spectacular  panorama.
