Watching Closely: The Shadow of the Ukraine War and Future Cooperation with China

The rise of Chinese power and its influence on the global stage is challenging the West. Whether the COVID-19 crisis or the war in Ukraine, China has sought every opportunity to project its power through diplomatic, technological, and economic means. The growing tensions between the West and China have had a wide array of implications and consequences in the geopolitical sphere of smaller countries' interactions. Mindful of China’s political support for Russia, several countries, including some from Central and Eastern Europe, have started following Lithuania’s steps, reconsidering their attitudes towards China. Are the EU Member States able to converge their decision-making processes and attitudes to act as one united voice? How is the growing asymmetry between Russia and China perceived by the West? What dangers or opportunities does China see in the Russia-Ukraine conflict? What are the areas where the West can and should constructively co-operate with China?
