Kyle Reutner is the General Manager for Manulele Distillers, which produces Kō Hana Hawaiian Agricole Rum on Oʻahu. A large component of Kyle’s job involves reviving hand-crafted, Hawai'i-made rum cocktails that go beyond the typical tropical drink. Sugarcane, or the Hawaiian word kō, has a long history in Hawai'i. The first Polynesian voyagers to Hawai'i brought select varieties of kō with them, and Hawaiians, in particular, used kō both ceremonially and medicinally. During the agricultural era, heirloom varietals of cane in Hawai'i were nearly destroyed in fires. Luckily, scientists were able to salvage them and they now continue to grow today. The distillery cultivates 34 unique varietals of sugarcane and produces 10 varieties of Agricole rum. Kyle shares the story of Hawaiian heirloom kō, where visitors can tour and taste the rum.
