AIT Chair Laura Rosenberger is on her fifth official visit to Taiwan since assuming office last year. On Monday, she met with President Tsai Ing-wen and President-elect Lai Ching-te to discuss Taiwan-U.S. cooperation. Her visit overlaps with former President Ma Ying-jeou’s trip to China, during which he’ll potentially meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

AIT Chair Laura Rosenberger arrived late Sunday for another Taiwan visit. The next morning, she was welcomed at the Presidential Office by President Tsai Ing-wen.

Tsai Ing-wen
President
It is a pleasure to meet with Chairperson Rosenberger once again. This is your fifth visit to Taiwan since taking office just over a year ago. I want to thank you for taking concrete action to demonstrate your passion and eagerness to deepen Taiwan-U.S. relations.

Laura Rosenberger
AIT chair
The U.S. and Taiwan also share a deep and abiding interest in maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. The U.S. commitment to Taiwan is rock solid, principled and bipartisan and we also welcome your commitment to maintaining the status quo. I know we both look forward to continued collaboration between the U.S. and Taiwan.

Rosenberger’s last visit was just over three months ago, the day after the Jan. 13 presidential election. On Monday, she also met President-elect Lai Ching-te to discuss the relationship between the U.S., China, and Taiwan.

Lai Ching-te
Vice president
May 20 is fast approaching. I would like to once again extend an invitation to you to attend my inauguration.

Laura Rosenberger
AIT chair
And we welcome your commitment to maintain the status quo. The U.S. commitment, as you know, is rock solid, it is principled and it is bipartisan and that’s not changing. We will continue to deliver on our longstanding commitment to enable Taiwan to maintain a sufficient self defense capacity.

During Rosenberger’s weeklong stay, she plans to meet Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu and other political leaders. Her visit comes ahead of a presidential transition, and it coincides with former President Ma Ying-jeou’s trip to China. The timing has given rise to speculation.

Chen Shih-min
NTU Political Science Department
I think the U.S. would like to discuss the content of Lai’s inauguration speech directly with him. Maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is a key issue for the U.S. in East Asia. I think the CCP will use any comments made by former President Ma Ying-jeou to wage a major propaganda campaign, targeting Taiwan and the U.S. Given that, I think Rosenberger will reach out to our government and seek to coordinate.

Rosenberger’s visit signals Washington’s support for Taiwan, at a time when Ma’s presence in China is complicating perceptions overseas.
