Lesson #1. Secret Pouring Medium Recipe
In this video, I will show you my SECRET Pouring Medium recipe. I think that the recipe below is the BEST Pouring Medium Recipe. It is the one I use for almost all of my pours. I love this recipe because I find that whenever I use this formula, my painting design stays put and doesn't change much while drying.
If you need to thin out your paints a little bit more after mixing them with this pouring medium, you can add a tiny bit more water.
BEST POURING MEDIUM RECIPE:
11 oz Elmer's Glue All Extra Strong Formula (or PVA Glue)
3 oz Floetrol
1 oz Liquitex Flow Aid
2 oz Distilled Water
Mix everything thoroughly in a bottle. It is now ready to be used to mix with your acrylic paints. Start by mixing even amounts of pouring medium and paint. Then slowly add more pouring medium until:
Your paint flows in a steady stream off of your wood stick into your cup instead of dripping in chunks
A small mound of paint forms on the top of your paint surface and then integrates into the rest of your paint within 1-2 seconds after a drop of paint falls from your mixing stick into the paint in your cup
It feels likes it has the consistency of heavy whipping cream
Why do I use Liquitex Flow Aid?
The flow aid reduces the surface tension of your pouring medium and therefore will help your paints flow and spread more easily without having to add too much water. It's like making your pouring medium a little bit more slippery and runny.
If you've used cheaper brands of paint and used too much water to thin them down so that they can flow better on your painting surface, you might have experienced some paint cracking or crazing. The cracking and crazing will happen because too much water will break down the binders in your acrylic paints, specially the cheaper kind.
So by using Liquitex Flow Aid in your pouring medium mix, you minimize the need of using too much water to make your paints flow properly.
Flow Aid Substitutes
Water
If you don't have Liquitex Flow Aid, you can replace it with water. Just keep in mind that if you are using some cheaper brands of paints, you might encounter some cracking if not careful with how much water you add to your paint mix.
Jet Dry Rinse Aid
Another option is to use a Jet Dry Rinse Aid. This is not a dish soap. It is a liquid that comes in a bottle. It contains some chemicals called surfactants, which lower the surface tension of water, similar to what the Flow Aid does.
Now keep in mind that the Jet Dry Rinse Aid has many different ingredients and was not made to be used with acrylic paints, therefore, some acrylic paints might not be compatible with it and you might see some undesirable results.
If you decide to use this as your flow aid, start by adding only a small amount to your pouring medium and keep notes about what acrylic paints you've used and the results you are getting in case you have some undesirable results.

INGREDIENTS:
1/4 tsp Jet Dry Dishwasher Rinse Aid
32 oz Water
Mix both of these ingredients in a container and use a little bit with your pouring medium.
Why do I use Elmer's Glue All?
The Elmer's Glue All helps keep your painting design in place while drying so you won't find that your design has shifted or that you've lost your cells after your paint has dryed for a few hours.
I prefer to use the Elmer's Glue All rather than the School Glue because some artists have mentioned that they have experienced some yellowing in their paintings after using School Glue.
I haven't experienced any yellowing while using Elmer's Glue All so that is why I recommend using this specific kind of glue. It is also stronger and will hold better with time.
You could also try using a PVA glue that is archival (which won't yellow over time).
Why do I use Floetrol?
Floetrol just makes my pouring medium flow better while helping with cell formation and paint levelling.
FYI... This pouring medium CAN NOT BE STORED for long periods of time (months) because it has water premixed in the formula. Bacteria and stuff can grow on your pouring medium because of the added water. Therefore, don't make huge batches of pouring medium if you don't plan to use it within a few weeks.
