Text on engineering drawing is used :

1- To communicate nongraphic information.
2- As a substitute for graphic information, in those instance where text can communicate the needed information more clearly and quickly.

Technical lettering is the process of forming letters, numerals, and other characters in technical drawing. It is used to describe, or provide detailed specifications for, an object.
