Black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus), known for their "chick-a-dee-dee-dee" song are a small, gregarious songbird found in almost every province in Canada. They are frequent visitors to bird feeders and often land on an outstretched palm in search of food. Breeding pairs will painstakingly excavate a small cavity in rotting wood and build their nests inside. Thus, chickadees need old, dead, and dying wood to raise their young.
