La Tirana, Pain and Hope
Thousands of pilgrims gather in La Tirana, a small village in the middle of the desert, to pay a moving tribute to the Virgin of Carmen, to the "Chinita" through music, dance, vows, and bodily sacrifices, but above all through a powerful syncretism that incorporates mysterious and profound beliefs from the original Tiwanaku and Aymara worlds into popular religiosity.
