In today's video we go over a few of my Hippopotamus Defense chess games which were played in the last Titled Tuesday. The event was won by Hikaru Nakamura with 10/11, separating himself from the rest of the field (again). However, there many other top chess players/streamers present including Magnus Carlsen, Christopher Yoo, Aleksei Sarana, Oleksandr Bortnyk, Nihal Sarin, Sam Shankland, Daniel Naroditsky, and more! Titled Tuesdays have become one of the biggest events worldwide, and @chess has done a great job running it. This was the first time I played in it and finished out with a score of 4/11. This was not an amazing performance, but not terrible either. I hope to play again and go for an even score.
The Hippopotamus Defense is my favorite chess opening for white, and favorite chess opening for black as well. In this video, we look at chess opening theory, chess opening tricks, chess opening traps, chess opening lines, chess opening tactics, chess opening variations, chess opening principles, chess opening moves, and chess opening ideas. I reached the National Master level (2200 USCF) by playing NOTHING but the Hippopotamus Defense. I am passionate about the system and believe it has more potential than most give it credit for. What if you are not a Hippopotamus Defense player? That is OKAY! In all of my videos I try and incorporate advice and lessons concerning chess ideas, chess moves, chess tricks, chess strategy, chess openings, chess middlegames, chess endgames, chess games, chess principles, and chess theory. If you are a beginner in chess, and are wanting to take your chess game to the next level, it really comes down to learning the fundamentals. And, no matter what chess opening you are playing (Hippopotamus Defense, Giuoco Piano, Czech Pirc Defense, Sicilian Defense, Caro-Kann Defense, King's Indian Attack, King's Indian Defense, Pirc Defense, Bird's Opening, Alekhine's Defense, Nimzowitsch Defense, English Opening, Jobava London, London System, London Opening, Vienna Game, Vienna Gambit, etc etc) chess strategy is VITAL! This is something which many chess players skip on. I mean, really no chess opening is going to make you win every chess game. There are so many areas of chess to consider including the middlegame, endgame, pawn structure, tactics, theory, checkmate patterns, etc. These are parts of chess which might seem intimidating, but will ultimately help you improve as a chess player.
Beginner chess players often try to find a chess opening that can help them win in 10-12 moves. However, is this going to work long term as you reach the higher levels? No. However, a chess opening more middlegame focused (including the Hippopotamus Defense) can help you in multiple areas of the game. The opening leading into the middlegame, as well as the middlegame as you look towards reaching a strong endgame position.

Whether you are a seasoned chess master who has been playing for years, or simply a beginner chess player simply looking to improve, I hope you get something out of it!
