On the eastern slopes of kyoto is Higashiyama, one of the best preserved historic districts in the city.  The Higashiyama distinct features narrow lanes and walkways lined with traditional buildings, shops, cafes, and restaurants.  The rustic wooden buildings found in the area almost take you back in time to another era of Japanese history.
