WALKS IN DORSET at LYSCOMBE BOTTOM (AND EXPLORING THE DESERTED VILLAGE AT LYSCOMBE) (4K)

In this episode of my series “ Walks in Dorset” I explore around the valley at Lyscombe Bottom – located about 9 miles North of Dorchester - looking for remains of a deserted village! Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car in a small layby in the road at Folly – just North of the village of Plush – and initially head Eastwards along the Wessex Ridgeway Long Distance Path. Shortly afterwards, I start my climb up a ridge on to to the top of Lyscombe Bottom – which lies as a natural bowl before me with stunning views.
My route then takes me South to the couple of buildings that remain today of the Medieval settlement of Lyscombe (long since abandoned). There is a restored chapel and the ruins of a cottage to look around as well as an ancient sheep dip on the stream that passes close by.
I then head North back up the Eastern side of the valley, looking out for some old Iron Age cross dykes. Before heading back to Folly, I take a detour to find the Dorsetshire Gap – a junction of at least five ancient droving / crossing tracks hidden under trees.
On the way back to my car, I pass by Nettlecombe Tout which has an Iron Age Hill Fort on top.

I use a GOPRO HERO 7, 8 or 10 Black Action Camera (sometimes with a Gimbal) & a Rode microphone (either a “Shotgun” or a Rode Wireless Go) together with a Canon Powershot SX530 HS.
