In this video I show you how I make a herbal cough and cold syrup using elderberries, aromatic spices and some wildcrafted ingredients. Four of those wildcrafted herbs are classified as demulcent herbs which act as soothing expectorants for the lungs and also help to sooth sore throats. As I make this syrup I talk to you about each ingredient and why I am putting it in this syrup.
I have a video about making elderberry syrup which is much more detailed when it comes to the actual recipe and process of making a syrup. Here is a link to that video: How to make Elderberry Syrup: A sweet...

For those of you who like exact recipes I have tried my best to provide you with one for this syrup. I feel that my syrups are forever changing according to what ingredients I have on hand as well as the amounts of ingredients I have. For this syrup I would have liked to add in more rosehips and mullien. However I just used what I had so here is the recipe I used in this video:

-1 cup dried elderberries & 2 cups of water brought to a boil and then reduced to low heat
- Add in 5 star anise pods, 1 cinnamon stick, 3 whole cloves (all crushed prior to adding in) and two lemon slices
-Add in 1/8 cup of rosehips (The rosehips were harvested one month earlier and then frozen. I usually like to add in at least 1/4 of a cup but that is what I had)
-Allow mixture to simmer on low for 30 minutes
-Strain & infuse demulcent herbs into the elderberry/spice liquid: 3/4 cup of dried self heal, 1/4 cup of dried plantain & mullein (There was probably only about 2 tablespoons of mullein that I had left to add in. Ideally I would add in at least 1/4 of a cup)
-Let herbs steep for 30 minutes & then strain
-Add in honey. I usually add in equal parts honey. I had 1 cup of my herbal liquid so I added 1 cup of honey.
-Mix well, bottle & refrigerate. (I usually refrigerate one bottle and freeze the other for later use)
-Consume refrigerated syrup within 2 weeks for best results and freshness

I highly recommend watching the previous video I did on making elderberry syrup because it really is a lot more detailed when it comes to the syrup making process and may be helpful if you plan on making a syrup in this manner.

A special thanks to the everylittle counts youtube channel for giving me some helpful feedback on my audio. I hope the audio sounds better than it did in the previous upload of this video. Here is the everylittle counts youtube channel: channel

For those of you who would like to look into things for yourselves in regards to the  information I mentioned about elderberry here are some articles I suggest reading. Of course more research needs to be done but the results are promising!
