Alvars are a unique type of habitat found where shallow soil overlays nearly flat calcareous bedrock, most often limestone. The resulting open habitat allows a diverse and unique set of plants, many of which are found nowhere else in Québec. While Ontario has been recognized for its relative abundance of alvars, as it contains about 75% of North America's alvars, recognition in Québec has been more recent. It was only during the late 1980s and early 1990s with the documenting of sites in the Outaouais such as the Aylmer alvar, that alvars were first widely recognized as existing in Québec.

This presentation was given to the OFNC monthly meeting on June 8, 2021.
