BMW has completed the electrification of its 5 Series Sedan, introducing two plug-in hybrid models, the BMW 530e Sedan and BMW 550e xDrive Sedan, available from November 2023. These models join the all-electric BMW i5 and combustion engine variants with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, expanding the range of electrified drive technology offered by the 5 Series Sedan.

The new plug-in hybrid models are characterized by spontaneous power delivery, increased efficiency, and a significantly extended electric range. They feature the latest BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid systems, combined with either a four-cylinder petrol engine in the BMW 530e Sedan or an in-line six-cylinder petrol engine in the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan from BMW Group's latest Efficient Dynamics modular generation.

The electric motor, developed specifically for the hybrid drive, is integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission along with its power electronics. This highly integrated drive unit contributes to the maximum system output of the two plug-in hybrid sedans, providing up to 145 kW/197 hp for the BMW 550e Sedan and 135 kW/184 hp for the BMW 530e Sedan.

The BMW 550e xDrive Sedan, with its 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol engine and the latest generation of BMW eDrive technology, generates a system output of up to 360 kW/489 hp and a maximum system torque of 700 Nm. It can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h, with a maximum speed of 140 km/h in purely electric operating mode.

The BMW 530e Sedan, on the other hand, has a 2.0-litre in-line four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. Together with the highly integrated e-drive unit, it generates a maximum system output of 220 kW/299 hp and a maximum system torque of 450 Nm, enabling it to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. Its top speed is 230 km/h, and it can reach up to 140 km/h in fully electric mode.

Both models benefit from a patented BMW innovation used to increase the power development of the electric motor. This innovation allows the compact electric motor to generate additional drive torque that would otherwise only be possible with a larger electric motor, making the additional torque clearly noticeable during acceleration and intermediate sprints.

The electric range for the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan is 83 to 90 kilometres according to WLTP, and for the BMW 530e Sedan, it is 93 to 103 kilometres. This extended range allows for longer commutes without producing any local emissions. The aerodynamic properties of both models, including special panelling and air deflection elements, contribute to this excellent electric range.

The lithium-ion high-voltage battery is arranged in the vehicle underbody, positively affecting the vehicle's centre of gravity and luggage compartment. The storage volume of the plug-in hybrid models is as large as that of the purely combustion engine powered variants, at a total of 520 litres. The high-voltage battery provides an increased usable energy content of up to 19.4 kWh, and the maximum charging power has been doubled compared to previous models, now at 7.4 kW.

Both the BMW 530e Sedan and the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan come with an extended range of standard equipment compared to the models with 48-volt mild hybrid technology. This includes 19-inch light alloy wheels and BMW IconicSounds Electric, developed in cooperation with renowned film music composer Hans Zimmer, providing a unique soundscape in purely electric operating mode.
