(24 Mar 2019) Serbia's far-right opposition leader Vojislav Seselj burned the European Union and NATO flags in Belgrade on Sunday during a protest coinciding with the 20 anniversary of NATO airstrikes that stopped the country's crackdown in Kosovo.
Hundreds of protesters joined Seselj in a demonstration through the Serbian capital condemning the 78-day NATO bombing that ended Serbia's rule over the territory many here view as their nation's historic heartland.
Anti-NATO sentiments emerged in the Balkan nation following the bombings in 1999.
In Kosovo, leaders say NATO's air war brought freedom for their people.
Seselj also used the rally to voice his opposition to ongoing plans for Serbia to join the EU.
Top Serbian officials are set to attend a main remembrance ceremony in a southern city later Sunday.
More than 10,000 people died during the 1998-99 Kosovo war.
