Klärli, Willi and Werner Schmid with Walter Baumgartner's orchestra.
The Schmids (three of five siblings) were the most successful Swiss harmony export.
Musically active since earliest childhood, the Schmids were a sensation at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1936, when Klärli was 19, Werner 10 and Willy 8 years old. They first recorded in 1939, and continued to tour during the next decades.
In 1954 they visited the USA (with visa as skiing teachers, as the musician's union would not have them in the country) and later Canada. They quickly became very popular, also performing as the "Happy Yodelers" or "Trio Shmeed", and were made honorary citizens of Vermont. A Swiss show they presented at Radio City Music Hall in 1959 was sold out for seven weeks. In 1961 they finally returned to Europe.
Klärli Schmid died in 1978, Werner in May 2008. Willy Schmid today lives near Zurich.
