Friends in Panjim have for long been telling us about a simple restaurant beside a quarry in Old Goa, which reputedly serves superb seafood. Early this August, we came to check out the legendary Kuttikar’s, and we were not disappointed.

Kuttikar Bar and Restaurant
Near Vassudeva Tamba metal quarry, Sao Pedro, Old Goa
Contact:
Timings: 12 noon to 3.30 pm, 7 to 10.30 pm; 2nd and 4th Mondays CLOSED

Kuttikar Bar and Restaurant is located in Sao Pedro, Old Goa, off the Panjim-Ribander-Old Goa road.

When approaching from the Panjim-Ribander side, continue for 1.5 km after the Ribander-Divar ferry point. Keep a look out for Kuttikar Stores on the river, i.e. the left side of the road. Exactly opposite, you will see a road with signboards for the Vassudeva Tamba metal quarry and Kuttikar Bar and Restaurant. Turn right and follow this short, bumpy road to its end, at Kuttikar restaurant.

On weekends, go early or expect to wait for a table as Kuttikar's is popular and crowded.

There is seating inside, downstairs, but we prefer the open upstairs area, with views of the green fields around.

We placed our order soon, before the Sunday crowds arrived. There was chonak (gian sea perch/sea bass), muddoshi (lady fish), squids, prawns, kingfish, pomfret, xinaneo (mussels).

Today we had 2 chonak thalis (Rs 220 each), 2 veg thalis (Rs 150 each), with prawns rawa fry (Rs 380), a whole pomfret rechead (Rs 650) and xinaneo rawa fry (Rs 400).

Chonak thali items: a lovely piece of chonak rawa fry, prawn curry, cauliflower bhaji, crabs, teesrio, sol kari, rice, salad and pickle.

Veg thali items: dal, curd chapati, papad, batata fodis, sol kari, rice, salad and pickle. Kuttikar had given an extra potato bhaji item in between also.

What a feast of fish and seafood today: 11 prawns, 11 xinaneo, a whole juicy pomfret, besides the chonak, crab, teesrio and prawn curry on our plates! The prawns were huge and very fresh, fried well but still not dry but nice, juicy.

The xinaneos were also very good. The masala in the rawa was perfect.

We would have liked more sweetness in the reachead masala used in the pomfret recheado, but that's a matter of taste. The fish itself was very sweet and fresh.

It’s not just Kuttikar’s fish plates that are delicious. Every item on the fish thali is superb. The chonak is also very fresh. Very good prawn curry, yeah. The crab was also quite nice. Fresh and tasty.

In the veg thalis, Pushpa and Maria enjoyed everything except the dal and sol kari.

No doubt, Kuttikar's is one of the best fish places anywhere in Goa.

Though Kuttikar has Google Pay, the mobile network coverage in this area is poor, so do carry cash when you come here. Only one of us in our group had carried cash, so we just about managed to pay our bill.

Kuttikar’s is clearly another monument of Old Goa. And is a must visit when in central Goa.

Hope you enjoy this 4k, hires video.
