I find that real wood looks much better on the outside of a drum shell, rather then the plastic wrap. This video shows how I´ve repaced the plastic finish with veneer.

Music written by Louis Prima: "Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing)"

Process in Short:
Before applying the veneer I made sure that the surfaces were clean an smooth by sanding and cleaning with acetone afterwards. I used epoxy resin which is a two component glue that allows for a perfect bond between shell and veneer. Using a vacuum bag works extremly well to have all the wrinkels and little bubbles of the veneer pressed against the shell. After a curing time of 24hours the shell can be removed from the bag and ist ready for sanding and spraying on the lacquer. Sanding down with fine grid and respraying a couple of times ensures a nice and even surface. Polishing gives the shell the shiny look in the end.
