Super 8 film of the 1976 Boscombe Carnival. Back in those days, nobody had heard of Dave Wells Properties, Christchurch Road went straight through Boscombe without a pedestrian area, and we all wanted to be on Jim'll Fix It with Jimmy Saville (here seen feet from us on a carnival float). How times have changed!

My dad set up his camera at the junction of Gloucester Road and Christchurch Road, filming the floats as they came down from Kings Park and turned right towards the chine. We are standing outside the catholic church entrance. Loads of the lovely old Victorian buildings are still standing in this film, before they were torn down to create shopping centres and flats.

The carnival consists of a Boys Brigade style marching band, majorettes, a vintage char a banc from the National Motor Museum titled "Jimmy Savile and Friends" I'm pretty sure it actually is Jimmy Savile himself on the float!  hmm.. less said the better really.. This is followed by a horse drawn Anchor Butter cart with a "Best dressed boy and girl" sign on the back, a Pernod float followed by a similarly branded Renault 12 estate, a vintage fire engine, another cadets band followed by majorettes, a Dewars Whisky vintage bus, a Winfrith Apprentices pirate ship float, a lorry from Broadstone with water shortage placards (1976!), a float with skeletons, drummers in kilts, Renwicks Travel float with a bear, End of the Line float (jungle theme) "First in Communications," Abbey National float complete with monks, Romsey Old Cadets association, dressed as Spanish bull fighters, RNLI float complete with a lighthouse, Dingles pirate float "More than just a little Bazaar," and then the crowds departing the scene.
