In this video we discuss how to calculate grade point average or gpa. We go over the formula used to calculate grade point average or gpa and also discuss the average grade point average in high school and in college.

How to calculate gpa grade point average
To calculate gpa, you need to know 2 things, the numeric value or points of a grade and the semester hours or credits for each grade. For the points of a grade, typically an A is worth 4 points, a B is 3 points, a C is 2 points, a D is 1 point and an F is worth 0 points.
Here is an example chart that shows 5 different classes, the grades received for each of the classes and the points for each of those classes based on the grade scale on the right. The next thing needed is the hours for each of the classes, which I have added in here.
Now we need to add in a column for total points for each of the classes, which is the points column times the hours, so for example an A in class 1 is worth 4 points, and the class was 4 hours, so 4 times 4 equals 16 total points for that class. And you do this process for each class, as I have done here.
Next, we need to add the total points column, which equals 48, and then add up the hours column, which equals 16.
And these are the 2 main numbers we need. So, we divide the total hours of 16 into the total points of 48, which equals 3.0, and that is the gpa or grade point average.
Based on the grading scale a 3.0 would be a B average, and here is the formula for calculating gpa.
A couple of notes, the average high school gpa is 3.0, with females averaging 3.1 and males averaging 2.9, and the average college gpa is 3.15.
