On this day, April 12, 2018, Rear Admiral (Deputy Commander posthumously) George Baltadoros lost his life when the single-seater M2000-5 aircraft of 114AM/331M, at a distance of nine nautical miles northeast of Skyros Island, crashed into the sea.
In honor of the Hero pilot Georgios Baltadoros, in his hometown, in Morfovouni Karditsa, on August 29, 2021, a single-seater Dassault Mirage F1 fighter aircraft was placed by the Ministry of Defense.
The chronicle of the tragedy:
The Air Force alert was sounded shortly after noon on Thursday, April 12, shortly after Easter. Then it became known that the trace of a Mirage 2000-5 aircraft returning to the 135th Fighter Squadron in Skyros after an interception operation had been lost.
The Air Force aircraft was returning to its base after an operation to intercept Turkish fighters. It should be noted that his fall is not related to the interception. In fact, the Turkish Air Force hastened to clarify that they have no involvement in the downing of the Greek fighter.
It was the pilot of the second fighter who reported losing contact with the Mirage 2000-5. The aircraft of Giorgos Baltadoros belonged to the 331 All-Weather Squadron THESEAS based at the 114th Fighter Wing in Tanagra. It had been stationed at the Skyros standby unit during Holy Week as one of the lookout aircraft.
Immediately, strong forces from all bodies rushed to the scene for the search and rescue operation. The Navy frigate PSARA, which changed course to participate in the search, was involved, two Sikorsky helicopters, a Super Puma, and a Chinook with a UK unit on board. From the Coast Guard's side, four boats and a helicopter participated in the search for the pilot of the fighter.
The Mirage 2000-5 of Giorgos Baltadoros, according to what became known, was flying at a fairly low altitude, below 6000 feet or 2000 meters, while when it approached the 135th Squadron of Skyros, there was cloud cover in the area that limited visibility. This is said to be something that made the flight difficult and caused the experienced pilot a kind of hallucination (vertigo) regarding the true position of the aircraft.
Vertigo or "spatial disorientation" is, as experts emphasize, the greatest danger for pilots, especially those of fighter aircraft.
The "black" box of the aircraft was retrieved from a depth of approximately 800 meters with the assistance of the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (ELKETHE) deep-sea vessel.
